Support to Ukraine will be sent from the EU medical team

Ukraine has requested support with medical equipment through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The EU will send respiratory support equipment, NIV masks and CPAP helmets, from the medical stockpile in Sweden that MSB is responsible for on behalf of the EU.

– Medical care in Ukraine is strained and the country's medical equipment is inadequate. Ukraine has requested assistance from the EU," says Fredrika Lindholm, project manager at MSB.

Through MSB, Sweden is one of the EU countries responsible for the EU's stockpile of medical supplies.

– The stockpile is located in Kristinehamn in Värmland and is now being activated for the fifth time. Previously, support has been sent with ventilators to Latvia and Turkey, and Ukraine has been supported with various forms of medical equipment.

About EU healthcare law in Sweden and rescEU

In 2020, the EU mandated Sweden to stock personal protective equipment such as respiratory masks and gowns, as well as ventilators and other equipment to help patients with respiratory problems. This material will be used in major crises when EU countries' own resources do not cover the needs.

The medical stockpile is part of the development of the EU's joint preparedness under rescEU. rescEU is a system of joint EU resources aimed at strengthening preparedness and response capacities for different types of crises, such as forest fires and pandemics. Sweden is also the host country for scooping aircraft and temporary emergency housing.

The project to establish the EU healthcare law is a collaboration between MSB, the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration and the National Board of Health and Welfare.
